Upgrade from One Windows OS To Another: Procedure for Uninstalling & Reinstalling McAfee

    Before Upgrading the Operating system from Vista to Windows 7 or 7 to 8, you need to uninstall McAfee, after Upgrade the Operating system to Windows 7 or 8, then please install McAfee product from your account.

    If you are wondering why this doesn't mention XP to Windows 7, that is because a clean installation is required in that case which will wipe the drive anyway.

     

    All the steps to be followed are given below.

     

     

    Step 1: Removing conflicting third party software.

     

    If you have any third party security software like Norton, AVG, and Spysweeper, Symantec live update etc. installed in your computer, please uninstall it. If any such programs are present, it can cause incompatibility with McAfee product.

     

     

    Step 2: Removing old version of McAfee from the computer if any.

     

     

    Check whether old McAfee products are installed on your computer by performing the steps below.

     

    1.         Double click on My Computer.

    2.         Double click on the Control Panel.

    3.         Double click on Programs and features.

    4.         Check for any McAfee program.

    5.         If you find any program click on remove to uninstall it from the computer.

    6.         Remove the remnants of McAfee from your computer.

               Click on the below link and run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool. Run the tool only if you had McAfee before. If not, please proceed to the next step.

               Restart the computer

     

    Now you please upgrade your Operating system to Windows 7.

     

     

    Step 3: Please run the following patch file for clearing temporary files and cookies. If you are getting the message “Please reinstall McAfee Programs”, please ignore it.

    Please do the following steps to download McAfee program.

     

     

    1.         Close all open windows.

    2.         Please go to your McAfee download page. https://home.mcafee.com/Secure/Protected/Login.aspx

    3.         Click on ‘My Account’.

    4.         Enter the email address and password you originally registered with McAfee and click Log In.

               If you forgot the password, please click on “Forgot Your Password?” option and enter the necessary details. The password will be sent to your E-Mail.

    5.         From the list under “My Protection Products”, find your McAfee product McAfee Internet Security and click the Download button with a downward arrow in the Download box.

    6.         Please click on ‘I Agree’ under the end user license agreement.

    7.         On the next page click on ‘Download’.

    8.         You will get a prompt to ‘Run’ or ‘Save’ the file.

    9.         Select ‘Run’. You may have to click ‘Run’ twice.            

    10.        Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the download and installation of your McAfee product.

     

               

    If these steps didn’t resolve the issue, please do the following steps: Remove the remnants of McAfee from your computer.

               Click on the below link and run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool. Run the tool only if you had McAfee before. If not, please proceed to the next step.

               Restart the computer

     

               Go to C:\Program files.

    o          Delete all McAfee folders from C:\Program files folder.

               In Windows XP: Go to C:\Documents and settings\All Users\Application data folder.

    o          Delete all McAfee folders from Application data folder.

               In Windows Vista/7/8: Go to C:\Program Data folder.

    o          Delete all McAfee folders from Program Data folder.

     

    Note: Application data in Windows XP and Program Data in Windows Vista/7/8 may be hidden. Please follow the steps to make it visible.

     

    a.         Open any folder in the computer.

    b.         Click “Tools” at the top and click “Folder Options”.

    c.         Click on “View” tab.

    d.         Scroll down and select “Show hidden files and folder”.

    e.         Click “Apply” and click “Ok”.

    f.          The Application data/Program Data folders will be visible now.

     

     

                Reset the Internet explorer

               Please hold Windows key in the keyboard and press 'R'.

               In the Run field, type inetcpl.cpl and click Ok.

               The Internet Properties window will open now.

               Click on ‘Advanced’ tab.

               Click ‘Reset’ at the bottom.

     

    Note: Resetting Internet Explorer will reset it to the factory settings. All user installed toolbars and add-ons will be disabled. Resetting is required because; add-ons and toolbars can change the way Internet Explorer connects to the Internet.

     

    •          Restart the computer once again.
    •          Go to McAfee website and start the installation again.
